Sometimes a miscommunication can happen while talking to your friends online. What you mean to say could be taken wrong and cause a fight.
There are a few things that can help with getting your point and tone across while chatting online.
- Use Emoticons. You can download tons that show a range of expressions, like angry, sad, happy, excited, embarrassed, etc.
- Use fonts to help emphasis words. Making a word CAPS or
bold or
italic can help put a spin on the meaning of a word. Talking in all CAPS generally means you are yelling out of excitement of anger.
- Punctuation can help break up and specify your sentence. Put question marks at the end of a statement so they know it’s a question. Show excitement or passion with an exclamation mark, and my favorite are the three periods “I don’t know…” this shows apprehension or allows a comment linger.
These techniques don’t always work and things can get skewed. It’s important to talk to your friends in real life and not always virtually. If something gets mixed up, give them a call to discuss it calmly and tell them what you meant to say, this will clear up any confusion that may have happened in your online discussion.
