On September 7, 1998, a company nobody knew about became incorporated by Larry Page and Sergey Brin and it’s name was: Google!

Today Google is worth over $23 billion and has 19,600 employees!  It’s a lot more than just a website, and Google is also very involved in environmentalism, charity work, and has been voted many times as the #1 Best Place to Work for by Fortune Magazine.

But how did all of this start?  Well, back in 1996, Larray Page and Sergey Brin were two Ph.D students at Stanford University.  They were working on a research project – they had an idea of how search engines (like yahoo) could perform a lot better.

They tested their idea, with the original domain name of: google.stanford.edu.  A few years later, after they graduated, they incorporated their company into: Google Inc.!

Why the name Google you ask?  Google is the common misspelling of the world “googol” which is the number 1 followed by a hundred zeros!

So do you google? Or have gmail?  What is your favorite search engine?
