Turkey Day:
What is Thanksgiving anyway? is it the day Mom and Grandma go nuts over cranberry sauce and perfectly pasted turkey? Or is it the day Macy's spends millions of dollars on balloons? yes it is, but there is more of a reason to why we celebrate.
The traditional "first Thanksgiving" is the celebration that took place at Plymouth Plantation, in 1621. These pilgrims, crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the year 1620 in Mayflower-A. About 100 people traveled for nearly two months- not an easy ride at all.
In the summer of 1621, due to a severe drought (no rain), the pilgrims called for a day of fasting and prayer to ask God for a nice full harvest in the coming season. God must have answered their prayers (or so they thought), because it rained at the end of the day, and saved their crops of corn.
It is said that Pilgrims learned how to grow beans, corn, and pumpkins from the Indians, helping them survive . In the autumn of 1621, they held a grand celebration, the grand feast was organized to thank god for all that he had done and given. This communal dinner is popularly known as “The first thanksgiving feast”. There is no official evidence to prove that the dinner actually took place, but we all go along with it cuz the turkey is really good- isn't it?
Thanksgiving is a harvest day festival. Traditionally, it is a day and time to give thanks for the harvest and just give a whole lot of thanks in general. This day is mostly celebrated in the U.S and in Canada.
Although this day started out as a religious holiday, it has become a secular one. What is so special about Thanksgiving Day, is that no matter what religion you believe in, or if you believe at all, we all have what to say thank you for.
So gather around your dinner table this Thanksgiving Feast, with your family and friends, delicious food, and give thanks to everything that you have.
